Private poolside mural – underwater theme

Melbourne, Australia

Under the Sea Poolside Mural

We created this photorealistic mural for a private residence to transform a plain fence into a vibrant underwater scene beside the clients' pool.

Dan developed the concept by creating a collage of photos Helainie took at an aquarium in Noumea, New Caledonia. He created the custom design to suit the clients' wall and setting.

To create the perfect artwork surface, the client built this wall by attaching cement sheeting to a timber fence and applying a render coat—an affordable and effective method for creating a smooth mural surface.

It was fun pulling together real photos we took at an aquarium and turning them into a full mural design. Got it done over three days without falling in the pool!

Dan Wenn, aka Danny Awes

Dan painted the mural entirely with spray paint. He applied a blue base colour first to unify the composition and reduce inconsistencies across the collaged reference images. Most of the artwork was completed freehand, with the addition of several hand-cut fish stencils created spontaneously on site to enhance the sense of depth and movement.

This project showcases a creative way to bring life to outdoor spaces with custom artwork that’s both site-specific and personal.
