WE ARE 90 DEGREES

One artist - Dan. One project manager - Helainie. Together we create murals that make spaces better. We think our work speaks for itself. It's what we're known for. It's what we love doing. We've been in business since 2012. And Dan's been painting his whole life.

Some things you may be wondering.

What is the process for commissioning a wall-mounted artwork?

Every commission starts with a brief, either one you bring to us or one we develop together. The best place to start if you'd like advice around what will work best in your space is to book a free artwork consultation with us. We'll then send you a formal quote and if you're happy to proceed then a deposit invoice. From there, Dan will come up with some written artwork ideas, send them to you for feedback and selection, and then he will design your canvas in full-colour as a digital artwork first. Once you're happy with the design, he paints it. No surprises - you'll know exactly what it will look like. You can come and collect your artwork from our studio or we can arrange for your artwork to be packed and shipped by an art courier.

How much does a commissioned artwork cost in Australia?

The cost depends on the size of the artwork, the substrate (canvas or board), the complexity of the design and how long Dan needs to design and paint it. Shipping and handling is an additional cost if you need the artwork delivered. Every artwork is costed individually. Book a free 30-minute consultation and we'll give you an accurate quote based on your requirements.

Can you paint in any style or just graffiti and street art?

Pretty much any style. Dan has been painting for over 30 years across graffiti, street art, fine art and illustration. If you have a style in mind, share it with us. If you're not sure, we can help you work out what will look best in your space.

Who owns the copyright on a commissioned artwork in Australia?

Under Australian law, the artist retains copyright on a commissioned artwork unless otherwise agreed in writing. When you commission an artwork from us you own the physical piece and have the right to display it. If you need broader usage rights (for example to reproduce the artwork commercially) let us know at briefing stage and we'll include this in your quote and project agreement. We put together some really good info on intellectual property and artists' rights in this article.

How long does it take to commission an artwork?

It depends on availability and the complexity of the artwork. As a guide, allow three weeks from deposit to finished artwork. Get in touch to find out our current availability.

Will I know what the artwork will look like before it is painted?

Always. Dan designs every commissioned artwork as a full-colour digital artwork first. You sign off on the design before he picks up a brush or a can. What you approve is what he paints.

What size artwork do I need for my wall?

There are no hard and fast rules here but nine times out of ten we think bigger is better. The right size depends on the space, the wall and the subject matter — spray paint has its limits at smaller scales, so Dan uses varying materials, methods and techniques depending on the artwork. Send us a photo of your wall before we meet for a free artwork consultation and we'll work it out together.

How is a large canvas artwork delivered and installed?

Canvas artworks are packed and shipped via specialist art couriers and are generally straightforward for clients to hang themselves. For board artworks, we work with contractors who supply, build and mount the panels on site. If you're not sure what you need, send us an email to let us know about your project and we can advise you on the best option for your space.

Why commission an artwork directly from an artist instead of through a platform or gallery?

When you buy art through a platform or gallery, the artist usually loses a minimum of 30% of the sale price in platform or gallery commission fees before they see a cent. That means the artist working within your budget is actually working to 70% of it, which affects the quality and experience level you can access. These intermediaries also limit direct communication and some platforms offer very little support when things go wrong.

When you work with Dan directly, every dollar of your budget goes to the artist and you'll have his direct number so you know it will always be Dan at the other end of the line.
